The Lagos State Government has asserted that its ongoing efforts to improve drainage channels, wetlands, and floodplains have notably mitigated the effects of heavy rainfall, despite challenges posed by climate change. The government has also advised critics not to politicize the issue of flooding, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the interventions being made.

Residents of Lagos are increasingly concerned about flooding during the rainy season, particularly in areas like Kunsela, Ologolo, and Gbagada. Recent incidents have prompted renewed inquiries into the reasons behind the persistent flooding in these regions, as it has become a common issue for many living in the city, according to Nairametrics.

Lagos Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, has emphasized the importance of resident involvement in flood control measures to help reduce the impact of flash flooding in the area. He outlined the need for community engagement in these efforts to effectively manage and mitigate flooding risks.

Nigeria, along with Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, and Benin Republic, has launched the Abidjan–Lagos Corridor Management Authority. This new regional body is tasked with overseeing the development and operation of the $16 billion coastal highway project, which aims to connect major economic hubs in West Africa.

Umar Mohammed, the Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA), stated that the recent severe floods in Lagos State and other areas were anticipated. He warned that more heavy rains and floodwaters are expected to continue for up to 12 weeks.
