Makerere University has launched its Strategic Plan for 2025/26–2029/30, aiming to transform into a fully research-led institution. This initiative aligns with Uganda’s Fourth National Development Plan and the Vision 2040 Tenfold Growth Strategy. The launch event took place at the University Main Hall and was attended by government officials, academic representatives, and development partners, highlighting the collaborative effort towards this goal.

Henry Musasizi, the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, has launched Makerere University’s Strategic Plan for 2025/26 to 2029/30. He emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing higher education, research, and innovation, which are seen as essential for Uganda's goal of increasing its economy to $500 billion by 2040. The launch took place at Makerere University during a ceremony attended by various stakeholders.

Makerere University has been ranked 23rd in Africa and 639th globally in the US News and World Report Best Global Universities Rankings for 2026–2027, marking its exit from the continent's top 20. The university achieved an overall global score of 44.9% in the assessment, according to CampusBee.

Makerere University has announced the availability of 40 fully-funded scholarship slots for female students from disadvantaged backgrounds for the 2026/2027 academic year. The Fees Waiver Female Scholarship, which allows selected students to study at Uganda's premier university without tuition costs, was approved by the Makerere University Council in December 2010. Applications are now open for eligible candidates.

Moi University is requesting a bailout of Sh11 billion to address staff dues and complete ongoing projects. Acting Vice-Chancellor Kiplagat Kotut presented this need before a National Assembly committee, specifying that Sh6.67 billion is required for recurrent expenditure and Sh5.3 billion for development projects.

The government has confirmed that the Kenya School of Agriculture being built at Kamutune in Meru County will be completed by December 2026. During an inspection of development projects in the Tigania West Constituency, Agriculture PS Dr. Kipronoh Ronoh stated that efforts to expedite the construction are being intensified.
