The Ministry of Health announced that demand for Lenacapavir, a new HIV prevention injection launched in April, is currently exceeding the available supply, particularly among men seeking the twice-yearly treatment. Dr. Herbert Kadama, who coordinates Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) at the Ministry, spoke at a meeting with HIV advocates, researchers, and policymakers about the situation.

The Ministry of Health reported that the demand for Lenacapavir, an HIV prevention injection introduced in Uganda in April, is surpassing the available supplies. Dr. Herbert Kadama, the ministry’s coordinator for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, noted that an increasing number of men are seeking the drug. This announcement was made during a meeting with HIV advocates, researchers, and policymakers.

The rollout of lenacapavir, a treatment for HIV, is being implemented selectively, raising concerns about who benefits from it and who does not. The Ministry of Health in Uganda has announced the arrival of an additional 19,200 doses of lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable drug for HIV prevention, due to increasing demand. This shipment is expected next month and will primarily be used for administering second injections to individuals already receiving the treatment.

The rollout of lenacapavir in Gauteng has revealed varying levels of readiness among the 360 designated sites, with 133 located in Gauteng. The first week of the program highlighted these differences in preparedness across clinics, according to Health-e News.
