The UK has announced a UGX 1 trillion package aimed at improving infrastructure, energy, and agriculture in Uganda. This initiative marks a transition from traditional aid to investment, as stated by British officials. The announcement was made by Baroness Chapman, the UK’s minister for Africa and international development, during her two-day visit, which included a groundbreaking ceremony for new projects.

Uganda is poised for significant economic transformation with the introduction of the Tenfold Growth Strategy, as outlined in the Budget Speech for FY 2026/27. This strategy aims to propel the country towards becoming a 500-billion-dollar economy, marking a shift from incremental progress to ambitious growth. The government emphasizes a new approach focused on substantial economic leaps rather than gradual improvements, signaling a pivotal moment in Uganda's pursuit of prosperity.

Recent figures from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) indicate that Uganda's agriculture sector is experiencing significant growth, primarily driven by a surge in coffee exports, which have reached record levels and generated billions of dollars. This trend highlights the importance of coffee in the country's export performance, suggesting a reliance on this single crop for agricultural success.

As fuel prices rise, transport operators in Uganda are focusing on technological upgrades for efficiency. New-generation commercial trucks are being introduced, which promise reduced fuel consumption and longer service intervals. Additionally, these advancements include a pathway towards electric freight transport, as manufacturers prepare to launch electric trucks in the market.

In February, Uganda's coffee export volumes increased significantly, with the country exporting 651,933 60-kilogram bags valued at $181 million, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries. This represents a 15 percent year-on-year increase in volumes and a 5.8 percent rise in earnings, despite a decline in global prices, which fell to an average of $4.63 per kilogram from $4.71 in January.

Uganda aims to achieve a 20% tax-to-GDP ratio by 2030, marking one of its most ambitious fiscal targets in decades. This goal is part of a new strategy developed by the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MOFPED) in collaboration with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
