Cryptocurrency company Binance has pledged $250,000 to aid in the containment of the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The funds will be distributed equally between the Uganda Red Cross Society and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) to support emergency response efforts in the affected regions.

As Uganda enhances border surveillance to prevent Ebola from the Democratic Republic of Congo, allegations have surfaced that Congolese nationals are bribing security personnel for entry. The extensive border, over 1,000 kilometers long, runs from Koboko to Kisoro, highlighting the challenges faced in maintaining effective border control amid the health crisis.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has received GeneXpert diagnostic machines to enhance tuberculosis (TB) detection and treatment in its health facilities. The machines were officially handed over at the Senior Officers Diagnostic Centre in Mbuya during a ceremony attended by senior military health officials and representatives from the Ministry of Health.

Uganda has reported a new positive case of Ebola, nearly three weeks after the last recorded case on June 5, 2026. This new case increases the total number of Ebola cases in the country to twenty, according to sources within the Ministry of Health. The confirmation of the case occurred on Monday.

Uganda recently closed its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo to prevent the spread of Ebola, as the Congo faces a significant outbreak with over 1,000 suspected and confirmed cases and more than 250 deaths reported as of May 27, 2026, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Public health experts suggest that such border closures may not be the most effective strategy in managing the outbreak.

Uganda is spearheading the CONNECT-VAS project, which aims to enhance vaccine research and manufacturing across four African countries. The initiative seeks to build stronger vaccine systems and reduce reliance on imports. This was discussed during an inception meeting held in Kampala on June 11, attended by scientists, policymakers, regulators, and development partners.
