Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the selection of nine African organisations for the fourth cohort of its Global Social Impact Accelerator. This initiative aims to support and empower these organisations through AWS's resources and expertise.

Southern African countries have launched a Vulture Safe Zone Alliance along with new guidelines aimed at protecting scavenging birds, according to the Tanzania Times. The initiative comes as vulture populations across the continent face severe decline. Six of Africa's eleven vulture species are currently classified as Endangered or Critically Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List, underscoring the urgency of coordinated regional conservation efforts to safeguard these birds.

The demand for critical minerals such as lithium, vanadium, copper, and cobalt, driven by the global transition to green energy, has implications for deforestation in Africa. Sub-Saharan Africa contains about 30% of the world's mineral reserves, including significant amounts of platinum, chromium, manganese, and cobalt, much of which is located beneath biodiverse forests that play a crucial role in carbon capture and soil health, according to The Conversation Africa.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has chosen three Nigerian social enterprises to participate in its fourth cohort of the Social Entrepreneur Accelerator Programme, out of nine selected from Africa. This selection highlights Africa's significant representation in the global initiative, with other participating countries including Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Cameroon, and Tanzania. The total cohort consists of 42 organizations.

At COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Tanzania, led by James L. Laizer, chaired the African Group and advocated for a careful strategy regarding the phase-out of fossil fuels among African nations. The call for bold action highlights Tanzania's commitment to balancing tourism and environmental conservation while addressing energy needs.

Mastercard has launched an Africa Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence in South Africa and Nigeria, with support from Recorded Future's threat intelligence. However, Kenya is not included in the first phase of this initiative.
