Nearly 30,000 acres of the Mount Kenya Forest's highland areas have been destroyed by a fire that broke out on September 1. According to Meru County forest conservation officer Wellington Ndaka, the blaze has affected four forest areas—Ruthumbi, Mucheene, Marania and Meru—and threatened to spread to indigenous tree sections. Ndaka said strong winds, dry conditions and flammable highland vegetation fuelled its rapid spread.
