The first group of 273 Ugandans evacuated from South Africa under the government’s voluntary repatriation programme has returned home. This group, which included 18 infants and 255 adults, arrived at Entebbe International Airport on Friday morning aboard the first evacuation flight. They were accompanied by Uganda’s High Commissioner, according to Matooke Republic.

The Government of Uganda has evacuated 424 Ugandan nationals from South Africa due to recent anti-migrant protests and xenophobic violence, which resulted in the deaths of at least three Ugandans and the displacement of hundreds. The first group of 273 returnees, including 255 adults and 18 children, arrived at Entebbe International Airport on an Ethiopian Airlines flight.

The eThekwini municipality has urged individuals to refrain from dropping off foreign employees at a closed repatriation site in Durban. Approximately 700 men, women, and children have gathered outside the former drive-in repatriation centre, seeking government assistance to return to their home countries.

According to Capital FM Business, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi announced that 151 Kenyans have been repatriated from South Africa due to rising anti-migrant tensions. Additionally, a total of 240 Kenyan nationals have registered for assistance with the Kenya High Commission in Pretoria.

According to SABC News, more than 8,000 Malawian nationals in KwaZulu-Natal have been processed by Home Affairs as they request repatriation. This increase in requests reflects a growing trend among foreign nationals in the region seeking to return to their home countries.
