For many Kenyans, July 1 marks the beginning of the government's new financial year, but for the followers of the Legio Maria of African Church Mission, it is one of the holiest days in their religious calendar. Since 1963, thousands gather in Homa Bay County to celebrate the release of the church's founder, Father Simeo Melkio Messias Ondeto, who had been imprisoned in Homa Bay Government Prison. According to Pope Lawrence Tilen Kalul, Father Simeo was arrested in June and charged with various allegations.
