Motor vehicle and motorcycle dealers have urged the government to end its 10-year contract with Russian firm Joint Stock Company Global Security, alleging corruption and ongoing delays in the implementation of the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS). This system was designed to improve vehicle tracking and security through the issuance of digital number plates, but has faced significant challenges, according to The Observer.

The Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, has instructed the contractor responsible for supplying Uganda's digital number plates to resolve ongoing shortages within three weeks. This issue has affected motorists and vehicle dealers for nearly two years. The directive was issued during a meeting with car and motorcycle importers in Kampala.
